Destination Wedding Photography – What is it actually?
Destination wedding photography means photographing weddings that take place in unusual and often exotic locations, not necessarily in the couple’s place of residence and often abroad. It is a specialized form of wedding photography in which the photographer and couple travel to a destination to document the wedding in a unique setting.
Destination wedding photography is all about capturing the beauty and charm of the chosen location, while capturing the special moments, emotions and details of the wedding day. This type of photography requires not only technical skill and creative vision, but also the ability to adapt to different environments and make the most of the specifics of each location.
As a professional destination wedding photographer, I work closely with my couples to ensure that your vision for the wedding and the photographic documentation match. I often advise on the planning, help to choose the best locations and photo spots and make sure to emphasize the uniqueness and feel of the destination in the pictures.
Overall, destination wedding photography offers the opportunity to capture unique and unforgettable wedding moments in breathtaking settings and create precious memories for you as a couple that you will cherish for a lifetime.
A special subcategory of destination weddings are elopements – a type of wedding in which a couple decides to get married secretly, quietly or in a relatively small group of friends and family, often without the traditional elaborate wedding celebration. Often this happens without the knowledge or presence of many family members or friends.
Over time, the meaning of “elopement” has changed. Previously, the term was used to refer to cases in which couples came together and married secretly without the consent of their families or against their will. Nowadays, an elopement is more of a conscious decision by the couple to avoid the big wedding celebration and the stress that can come with it.
Elopements have grown in popularity in recent years as couples look for more intimate, personal and often less expensive ways to celebrate their love. Elopements often take place in scenic locations such as beaches, mountains, forests or historic towns. The ceremony can be very simple, such as at the registry office or with a private ceremony with an officiant.
Elopements offer couples the freedom to design their wedding the way that suits them best, without having to worry about societal expectations or traditional norms. An elopement can be a romantic and intimate way of tying the knot and creating unforgettable memories. And elopements in particular offer a stress-free, relaxed setting and perfect conditions for destination wedding photography.
The best thing about destination weddings? The couple shoot! And this is always included in my DW packages and takes place in a relaxed manner, for example on the following day or the evening at sunset.
Steps & FAQ for your destination wedding photos
Good communication and preparation are the be-all and end-all for a successful project and especially for such an important event in life, especially abroad. In a meet and greet (either in person or via video call) we first clarify your individual wishes and ideas. Do you already have an idea of what you want in terms of motifs and time frame? Or do you need personal advice first? Either way, we will first clarify everything else in a relaxed first talk – without obligation and free of charge.
After we have exchanged personal information, I will reserve your appointment for a week. The booking will be confirmed once you have signed the contract and I have received the deposit.
In terms of workflow, destination weddings are like traditional weddings – just at a different location.
If you’re already familiar with the area of your choice, please suggest great locations for the couple shooting and we will later make plans together. I am happy to explore the area in advance myself on site for the best possible photo sceneries and lighting situations.
Depending on the package you choose, I will accompany you either from the getting ready to the exuberant celebration, or to specific sections (time windows of your choice) of your wedding. (For destination weddings, a minimum booking time of 3-4 hours applies.)
I will always be around you and your guests with calm, empathy and serenity – unobtrusive and attentive.
The couple shoot takes place either at sunrise or sunset to capture the best possible light.
Within a few days I will send you a small SneakPeek selection of the highlights and after about 2-3 weeks you will receive your edited image selection as a digital download and online gallery.
If you wish, I can also create a very individual photo album for you.
My spectrum as a wedding photographer includes authentic and aesthetic documentary wedding photography, i.e. accompanying you with my camera, unposed, e.g. from getting ready to the ceremony or right to the end, with wedding ceremony & guest portraits, which are often created directly after the ceremony. Elopements at your desired location also fall into this category. After wedding couple shootings are included in my destination wedding shootings.
I am also happy to shoot pre-wedding and engagement photo shootings with you at exotic locations worldwide.
I am usually based in Hannover, Germany, and at times in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and I work worldwide for my photo assignments. Due to my close connection to Malaysia, I am very familiar with large parts of Southeast Asia (Thailand, Bali, Vietnam) and have good connections there.
In general, however, as a wedding photographer I am open to fly anywhere in the world and I am always happy to get to know new countries and regions and to discover new spectacular spots with my couples – whether in Europe, Asia, America or elsewhere.
Popular places for destination weddings and couple photography in Germany are Neuschwanstein Castle, the Black Forest, the vineyards of the Rhine Valley, the Pilsum Lighthouse by the North Sea Coast, the Bavarian Alps near Tegernsee, Schwetzingen Palace and Gardens and the Cologne Chocolate Museum.
Outside of Germany couples love to tie the knot or have their destination wedding photos taken in Thailand (Phuket, Koh Samui, Krabi, Kho Phi Phi, Koh Chang, Khao Lak), Bali, France (Paris, Provence, Camargue), the Maldives, Seychelles, Bahamas, Spain (Mallorca, Ibiza , Barcelona), Greece (Santorini, Mykonos, Corfu), Italy (Florence, Venice, Lake Como, Capri, Calabria), Portugal (Lisbon, Algarve, Porto), … – the possibilities are endless. Depending on personal preference, historical cities, tropical beaches and nature parks with forests and e.g. waterfalls, or snowy locations e.g. in Switzerland or in the USA are ideal for destination weddings and wedding photography or couple shootings. Last but not least, metropolises such as Tokyo, New York or São Paulo invite you to wedding photography with diverse, unusual motifs and more creative scenery according to your personal taste.
As a wedding photographer, I know how important it is to you to receive your photos as quickly as possible. You will get your edited pictures within approx. 2-3 weeks, and a small Sneak Peek selection within 72 hours, so that you can share the memories of your day with your loved ones and via social media as quickly as possible.

Travel cost destination wedding photography
In addition to the photography fee, there are travel and accommodation costs that must be borne by the client. Specifically, these are:
- Return flight to the location
- Accommodation for 3 nights (arrival 2 days before the event, departure the day after the event)
I generally arrive two days before the event in order to prevent any unforeseeable events (flight cancellations, etc.) and to explore the location and surroundings for great photo spots in advance. For an event on Saturday, for example, I would arrive on Thursday and leave on Sunday.
If my schedule allows, I often like to stay a little longer after the job and travel the region – at my own expense, of course :)
All prices include meet & greet, preparations, basic image editing, online gallery & hi-res JPG downloads. Incl. VAT.
